Why every US F-150 VIN starts with 1FT
The world manufacturer identifier 1FT means a Ford truck assembled in the United States. The leading digit is the country, F identifies Ford Motor Company, and T designates the truck vehicle class — the same code you will find on a Ranger or a Super Duty.
Trucks assembled in Canada carry 2FT. If a truck presented as a US-market F-150 opens with something else entirely, that is worth understanding before you buy: it may be a legitimate import, or the paperwork may not describe the vehicle in front of you.
Cab configuration and bed length
Ford has offered the F-150 in three cab configurations for many years, and they are not interchangeable in use or in value.

The eighth character identifies the engine. The F-150 has carried an unusually wide spread of powerplants across recent generations, and they differ enormously in running cost, towing capability and known maintenance patterns.

Match the decode against the engine bay. An engine swap is not automatically a problem, but an undisclosed one affects insurance, emissions compliance and what the truck is worth.
Model year and which generation that makes it
The tenth character gives the model year, and the model year places the truck in a generation — which is the single most useful framing when researching known issues, parts availability and what a fair price looks like.

Model-year codes run on a thirty-year cycle with I, O, Q, U and Z omitted: F is 2015, K is 2019, L is 2020, M is 2021, N is 2022, P is 2023, R is 2024, S is 2025 and T is 2026. The digits 1 to 9 covered 2001 to 2009.
Which plant built your truck
The eleventh character identifies the assembly plant. F-150 production has centered on the Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan and Kansas City Assembly in Claycomo, Missouri, and a decode resolves the character to the specific facility for that model year.
Plant of origin matters mainly for recalls. Ford commonly scopes a recall to trucks built at one plant between two dates, so two otherwise identical F-150s can have entirely different recall exposure. That is a VIN-level question, not a model-level one.
The 2015 aluminum body change, and why it matters
For the 2015 model year Ford moved the F-150's body panels to aluminum alloy while retaining a high-strength steel frame. The stated goal was weight reduction, and it delivered — but the consequences for a used buyer are about repair, not performance.
- Aluminum body repair requires different tooling, different technicians and a physically separated work area
- Not every body shop is equipped or certified to do it, which narrows your options after a collision

What the VIN says about trim — and what it does not
The descriptor section narrows the trim considerably but does not name it. F-150 trims — XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, Tremor and Raptor — are marketing designations layered on top of the series and equipment codes the VIN actually carries.
Since trim badges are inexpensive to buy and easy to fit, badge-swapped trucks are common. The reliable route is the factory build record behind the VIN, which lists the options that were genuinely fitted at the plant rather than the ones somebody screwed on afterwards.
Checking F-150 recalls by VIN
Recalls apply to specific VIN ranges, so a general search for “F-150 recalls” will show you campaigns that have nothing to do with the truck you are looking at. The question that matters is whether this VIN has an open, unrepaired recall.
NHTSA publishes that lookup free, and manufacturers must perform recall repairs at no cost to the owner however many times the vehicle has changed hands. On a used purchase an open recall is worth raising with the seller — the repair is free, but arranging it is your time.
