What CheckerVIN does

A VIN is the seventeen characters stamped on a vehicle's dashboard, door jamb and title. Encoded in them is where and how the car was built — the plant, the model year, the engine and trim. CheckerVIN reads that code and turns it into something you can use: a report that names the factory build, lists the specifications, and flags any safety recall the manufacturer has issued but not yet resolved.

You start on the homepage, enter a VIN, and land on a preview of the vehicle. Add an email and the full report opens right away, with a permanent link sent to your inbox. There is no account to create and no payment step anywhere in that flow.

Why it's free

The honest question every free tool has to answer is "what's the catch?" Here it is, in full: we ask for your email. That is the entire exchange. We use it to send you the report you asked for and, if you leave alerts on, to tell you when a new record is filed against a VIN you checked. We do not sell or rent email addresses, and every message carries a one-click unsubscribe. There is no paid tier waiting behind a button, because there isn't a paid tier at all — the report is the product, and it is free.

Where the data comes from

A report is only as trustworthy as its sources, so we name them rather than hide them. The factory build and specifications are decoded from the VIN using the NHTSA's public vPIC database and enriched from a manufacturer specification database. Open safety recalls come straight from NHTSA's recall records. Fuel-economy figures come from the EPA.

None of this is a guarantee about a specific car's condition. A report reflects what has been reported to these sources; events that were never reported will not appear, and no VIN report replaces an independent mechanical inspection.

What's live today, and what's next

Today the report covers the factory build, the specifications and open safety recalls. The full vehicle history — title brands, accident and damage records, and odometer readings from NMVTIS-participating sources — is being connected and will join the report automatically once the data provider is live. Until then we show those sections as pending rather than claiming them. When a section isn't connected yet, the report says so.
