The two things we collect
A VIN check needs a vehicle to look up and somewhere to send the answer, and that is the whole of what we ask for. The VIN or license plate identifies the vehicle; the email address is where the report is delivered and where a new-recall alert would reach you if you keep alerts on. We do not request a name, a postal address, a phone number or payment details, because none of them is needed to decode a VIN or list a recall.

How that information is protected
Protection starts with collecting little, because data that is never gathered cannot be breached. On top of that, the connection between your browser and our servers is encrypted in transit over HTTPS, so the VIN and email you submit are not sent in the clear. Access to stored data is limited to what operating the service requires, and because there is no card surface anywhere on the site, the highest-value target in most data breaches simply does not exist here.

Where the vehicle data comes from
The report’s substance is federal work product, not a private dossier. The factory build and specifications are decoded from the VIN through NHTSA’s vPIC database, which manufacturers file their VIN structure with, and open safety recalls come from NHTSA directly. Both are public records, which is why the check can be free and why nothing about the vehicle owner is involved in producing it.
The licensed history layer — title brands, accident and odometer records — is not live yet, and the report marks those sections as pending rather than claiming them. When that layer launches, each record will be attributed to the source that supplied it.
