What a Chevrolet VIN tells you
Chevrolet runs broad model lines with many configurations, which is exactly the situation where a decode earns its keep. Two Silverados of the same year can differ by engine, drivetrain, cab, bed and axle ratio — and by several thousand dollars.

Chevrolet WMI codes
The first three characters place the vehicle before you decode anything else. General Motors splits them by country and by vehicle class.

Position 8: the engine character
On a GM vehicle the eighth character does more work than almost any other. It identifies the engine the vehicle was built with, and Chevrolet has historically offered several engines within a single model line and model year.
Because the codes are GM-specific and have been redefined across generations, reading the character against a chart from the wrong era misidentifies the engine. Decode it against the model year, and then confirm physically — engine swaps happen, and an undisclosed one affects insurance, emissions compliance and value.

The cycle runs thirty years, skipping I, O, Q, U and Z. Digits 1 through 9 covered 2001 to 2009, and the same letters ran A for 1980 through Y for 2000 — so a letter alone is ambiguous until you place the vehicle by generation.
Position 11: which plant built it
The eleventh character identifies the assembly plant. GM operates plants across the United States, Canada, Mexico and elsewhere, and each carries its own code within the manufacturer's scheme.
It matters most for recalls. GM commonly scopes a campaign to vehicles built at one plant between two dates, so two otherwise identical Chevrolets can carry entirely different recall exposure.
The RPO sticker: GM’s option list
This is the part of Chevrolet ownership that separates people who know their vehicle from people who are guessing. Regular Production Option codes are GM's internal designations for every factory option, and they are printed on a Service Parts Identification label attached to the vehicle.

RPO codes worth recognizing
There are hundreds, and most are mundane. A handful come up constantly in listings and are worth knowing on sight.

Finding the paint code on a Chevrolet
The VIN does not encode paint color — no manufacturer's does. On a Chevrolet the color lives on the RPO sticker, written as a code alongside the rest of the option list.
You will typically find both a base coat and a clear coat identifier. When ordering touch-up or a respray, supply the code rather than the marketing color name, because one name can cover more than one formula across model years.
Silverado and Chevrolet truck VINs
Chevrolet trucks carry a truck-class WMI rather than the passenger car code, and the descriptor section encodes cab configuration and gross vehicle weight rating class alongside the usual body and engine information.
On a truck, three things drive the price more than anything else: engine, drivetrain and cab configuration. All three are decodable, and all three are misdescribed in listings often enough to be worth checking before you travel to see the vehicle.
- Cab configuration — regular, extended and crew cabs are not interchangeable in value
- Bed length as built, which pairs with cab choice and constrains what fits
- Engine, from the eighth character, then confirmed in the engine bay
- Two-wheel versus four-wheel drive, confirmed by transfer case controls in the cab
- Axle ratio from the RPO sticker, if you intend to tow
- Gross vehicle weight rating from the door jamb label
Checking Chevrolet recalls by VIN
Recalls attach to VIN ranges, not to models, so a search on the model name returns campaigns that may not apply to your vehicle. Check the VIN itself.
NHTSA publishes that lookup free, and manufacturers must perform the remedy at no charge to the owner regardless of how many owners the vehicle has had. On a used purchase an unrepaired open recall is a fair thing to raise with the seller.

GMC, Buick and Cadillac: same platform, different VIN
General Motors sells closely related vehicles through several divisions, and the overlap is more substantial than the badges suggest. A Silverado and a Sierra share a platform; several SUVs across the divisions do the same. But each division has its own world manufacturer identifier, so the VINs are not interchangeable.
This matters in two directions when you are shopping. It widens your search — a sibling model may be the same vehicle at a different price — and it means parts, service procedures and RPO codes frequently carry across even when the model names do not.
