There is a specific place to settle this argument. Federal regulation sets out, per vehicle class, exactly which attributes a manufacturer has to make readable from the five characters in positions four through eight. The list is short and it is worth reading closely, because what is missing from it explains everything else on this page.

Engine type appears in every row. Brake system appears for trucks and buses. Restraint system appears for cars. The transmission appears nowhere at all — not for cars, not for pickups, not for buses. A manufacturer that tells you nothing about the gearbox in its VIN is fully compliant.

Why two decoders can both be right

The same regulation contains a sentence that quietly governs this entire subject: the characters used and their placement within that section may be determined by the manufacturer, provided the required attributes can be deciphered using information the manufacturer supplies to the regulator.

Read that twice. The manufacturer designs its own coding scheme and hands the key to NHTSA. Everything on the required list has to be in there somewhere. Everything else is discretionary — a maker may encode transmission, axle content, trim and roof style if it finds that useful for its own parts and warranty systems, or it may spend those five characters on other things entirely.

A decoder is only ever replaying that filed key. When it returns nothing under transmission, it is not broken and it is not incomplete. It is accurately reporting that the manufacturer never put a gearbox in those characters.

What five real VINs actually returned

Two answered, three did not. Every one of those decodes returned engine cylinder count and displacement without hesitation, because engine type is on the required list. The split falls exactly where the regulation predicts it will.

This is worth internalizing before you spend an afternoon trying different lookup sites. If your vehicle is one of the three, no amount of searching will produce a transmission from those characters, because it was never written into them.

The transmission carries its own identification

Here is the reassuring part. The component you are asking about is labeled. Automatic and manual units alike leave the factory with an identification tag, a bar-code sticker or a stamped pad, and that marking is specific to the unit rather than the vehicle.

  • A metal tag under one of the pan or bellhousing bolts
  • A printed or bar-coded sticker on the case, often facing the firewall
  • A stamped pad on the tail housing or extension housing
  • A cast part number in the aluminum itself, useful when a tag is gone
  • On many manuals, a plate on the top cover or the side of the case
  • A build date, which tells you whether the unit predates the car

Reaching it usually means getting under the vehicle with a flashlight and a rag, and the marking is frequently filthy. It is still the fastest honest answer available, because it describes the transmission that is in the car right now rather than the one the factory originally installed.

Option labels and factory build records

Several manufacturers print a block of short option codes on a label somewhere in the vehicle, and the transmission is usually one entry in that block. General Motors is the clearest example, since its parts label lists a long column of codes covering everything from the axle to the seat fabric.

Those labels have a well-known weakness: they get replaced with the panel they are stuck to. A door swapped after a collision takes its label with it, and a glove box label vanishes when the box is changed. When the label and the vehicle disagree, the vehicle wins.

The record behind the label is more durable. Manufacturers keep a build file for each VIN, and a franchise parts department can pull it in a couple of minutes. That is the route that survives replaced panels, missing tags and honest confusion, and it is free to ask.

The question underneath the question

Most people looking for a transmission by VIN do not want the transmission's name. They want to buy the correct fluid, and they have discovered that the parts store catalog wants to know more than the model year.

This matters more than it used to. Automatic transmission fluids are not interchangeable across modern units, and the wrong specification can produce shudder, poor shift quality and, given time, real damage. The specification is not something to approximate from a forum thread about a similar car.

The owner's manual states it for your vehicle as built. Where the manual is missing, the transmission tag plus a parts counter will resolve it, and the dipstick on vehicles that still have one is sometimes stamped with the fluid type directly.

When the gearbox is not the one that left the factory

A used vehicle with meaningful mileage may be on its second transmission, and this is precisely where VIN-based answers become actively misleading. The build record describes the assembly line. It has no idea what a shop fitted in year nine.

Replacement units come from several places — a reman exchange, a salvage vehicle, or an updated design the manufacturer released to fix a known weakness. Any of them can be a perfectly good outcome. All of them break the assumption that decoding the VIN describes the current drivetrain.

  • Look for fresh gasket sealant or clean fasteners on a otherwise grimy case
  • Ask directly whether the transmission has ever been replaced or rebuilt
  • Request the invoice — a reman unit usually carries a transferable warranty
  • Check whether the replacement is the updated design or the original one
  • Treat a repainted or wire-brushed case as a question, not an answer

For a buyer, the transmission is among the two or three components that can turn a reasonable purchase into a loss. It is also the one people inspect least, because there is nothing to see from outside the car.

A short drive answers more than any lookup. Bring the vehicle to full operating temperature, then pay attention to how it behaves rather than to how it sounds at idle — hesitation before engagement, a flare between gears, a shudder at light throttle, or a shift that arrives late and then arrives hard.
