Ram VIN decoder: the brand split, the diesel, the axle

• Model year, model and body class as filed with NHTSA
• Engine displacement, cylinder count and fuel type
• Drivetrain — two-wheel or four-wheel drive
• Cab configuration and series
• Gross vehicle weight rating class, which separates the 1500 from the heavy duty trucks
• Country of manufacture and the assembly plant
• Open safety recalls against that exact vehicle

Ram trucks were sold as Dodge models for decades. For the 2010 model year the truck line was separated into its own brand, and from that point the vehicles are Rams rather than Dodge Rams.

This is not a cosmetic rename. It changes how the vehicles are cataloged, how listings are titled, and how you should search for parts and comparable sales. A search for one term will surface trucks from the other era, which is why establishing the model year from the VIN before you start researching saves confusion.

The diesel engine in a heavy-duty Ram is built by a separate manufacturer. That means the truck and the engine are identified independently, exactly as they are on a commercial truck.

The practical consequence on a used purchase is significant, because the engine is the most valuable component and the one whose history you most need. The chassis VIN will not retrieve it — the engine serial will.

• Find the engine serial on the block data plate and photograph it
• Use it to request service history from the engine manufacturer
• Ask whether the engine has ever been rebuilt or replaced, and for documentation
• Ask about emissions system service — this is where diesel running costs concentrate
• Check for outstanding engine campaigns separately from the vehicle recall check
• Ask whether emissions equipment has been tampered with, which is both illegal and expensive to reverse

On a pickup, configuration drives the price spread more than anything else, and two of the three items are visible while the third is not.

The number is a weight class, and it changes more than capability. Heavy-duty trucks sit in different registration classes in some states, carry different inspection requirements, and are subject to different rules once loaded.

That odometer point is worth knowing — the disclosure rules exempt vehicles above a weight threshold, so mileage on a heavier truck carries less documentary backing.

The factory build record for a VIN lists the options the truck was actually delivered with, including the axle ratio, the tow package content and the trim equipment. A dealer parts department can retrieve it.

On a truck this matters as much as a window sticker does on a car, because trim names — Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Rebel, Limited — imply equipment that badges alone do not prove. Get the record, then walk the truck against it.

Recalls attach to VIN ranges rather than models, and group campaigns sometimes span several brands where a shared component is involved. NHTSA's free lookup answers it at VIN level, and the remedy costs the owner nothing.

On a diesel truck, ask the engine manufacturer separately about engine campaigns using the engine serial. Those are a different list.
