The MX-5 has one of the most active enthusiast communities of any car, and that community organizes entirely around generation codes. Parts listings, forum threads, buying guides and classified ads all use them, and knowing which you have matters more for fitment than the model year does.

Rotary engines change the entire assessment
Mazda is the only manufacturer to have committed seriously to the rotary engine in production cars, and the RX models that used it are a genuinely different used-buying proposition from anything else.
A rotary has no pistons. It seals combustion with apex seals riding against the housing, and those seals are a wear item on a scale piston rings are not. Rebuilds are an expected part of long-term rotary ownership rather than evidence of abuse — which inverts the usual used-car reasoning, where a rebuilt engine is a warning sign.
- Ask directly when the engine was last rebuilt, and by whom
- A documented rebuild by a rotary specialist is a positive, not a negative
- Ask about compression test results — on a rotary this is the key diagnostic
- Expect higher oil consumption than a piston engine; it is by design, not a fault
- Ask how the car was warmed up and shut down, which materially affects seal life
- Establish that a rotary specialist is reachable where you live before buying
- Budget for specialist servicing rather than assuming a general shop can do it
Skyactiv engines and chassis technology
Skyactiv is Mazda's umbrella name for a generation of engines, transmissions and chassis engineering introduced progressively rather than all at once. The decode returns the engine family, and the model year tells you which stage of the rollout the car sits in.
Most Skyactiv gasoline engines use direct injection, which brings intake deposit accumulation as a maintenance consideration rather than a defect — the same pattern seen across the industry. Ask whether intake cleaning has been performed, and at what mileage.
The rust question on older Mazdas
Mazdas of certain older generations developed a reputation for corrosion, particularly in regions that salt roads in winter. On an older car this matters more than mechanical condition, because structural rust is rarely economic to repair.

- On an MX-5, check the rocker panels and the frame rails underneath
