Campaign 11V-134: the web in the vent line
Filed on February 25, 2011, this campaign covered 52,000 model year 2009–2010 Mazda6 vehicles built between April 8, 2008 and February 8, 2010. The federal record is admirably direct about the cause: a certain type of spider may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line, and this may cause a restriction in the line.
The chain from there is ordinary engineering. The evaporative system captures fuel vapor in a charcoal canister and later purges it into the engine. That purge needs air to come in through the vent line to keep the tank at equilibrium. Block the vent and the tank cannot equalize — pressure inside goes excessively negative as the system pulls, and a tank held under enough negative pressure risks cracking. A cracked fuel tank is a fire risk.
The first remedy was a spring
Dealers inspected and cleaned the canister vent line, then installed a spring to prevent this type of spider from entering it. That is the fix as the federal record describes it: a physical barrier, fitted free of charge, whose entire job is to stop an animal getting in.
It is a genuinely elegant answer to the problem in front of them. Redesigning the evaporative system across a model range would have taken years; a spring in the vent line could be fitted in an afternoon on cars already on the road.
Campaign 14V-114: the same problem, three years later
On March 11, 2014, Mazda filed again. This campaign covered 42,000 model year 2010–2012 Mazda6 vehicles built between September 14, 2009 and May 2, 2011, and equipped with the 2.5L engine. The description repeats almost word for word: spiders may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent hose, blocking it and causing the fuel tank to have an excessive amount of negative pressure.
The second remedy went further than the first. Dealers reprogram the powertrain control module and inspect and clean the vent line, and if a web is found, the fuel tank and the check valve on the vent line are replaced.

What it means when a campaign runs twice
A repeated recall on the same failure is one of the more useful signals in the federal record, and it is worth knowing how to read.
The second filing did not simply extend the first to more cars. It changed the strategy. Where the original answer was to physically exclude the spider, the follow-up added software that manages tank pressure so that a blocked vent does not produce a dangerous vacuum in the first place. The engineering conclusion is visible in the remedy: keeping the animal out could not be relied on as the only defense.
When you find a campaign on your own VIN, it is worth checking whether a later campaign covers the same system. A car repaired under an early campaign is not automatically outside a later one.
Takata on a Mazda, and why the filing names states
Read Mazda’s air bag campaigns and you find something that appears on almost no other kind of recall: a list of places. Several are written to cover vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands — a grouping the filings call Zone A — with coverage extending beyond it separately.
The reason is the defect mechanism. Takata inflator propellant degrades faster in heat and humidity, so the same part in the same car is more dangerous in Louisiana than in Montana. With a finite supply of replacement inflators, the recalls were phased by climate rather than released everywhere at once.
Why zoning matters when you buy across state lines
The phrase that does the work is “sold, or ever registered in.” It follows the car, not the current address. A Mazda that spent six years in Florida and was then sold north remains a Zone A vehicle for the purposes of that campaign.

- Ask where the car spent its early life, not just where it is now
- Search the VIN rather than assuming geography excludes it

This is one of the few cases where a car’s past location changes what the manufacturer owes you, which makes it worth asking about directly.
Who pays, and for how long
Mazda does. A safety defect must be remedied at no charge to the owner, parts and labor included, and the right belongs to whoever owns the car now rather than to its first buyer.
The limit is measured to the recall, not to the repair: the free-remedy requirement applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the defect was determined. The Mazda6 populations in both spider campaigns are past that boundary now, so on those cars the free remedy is no longer something the manufacturer is compelled to provide. Call a dealer with the VIN before assuming either way.
Buying a used Mazda
Run the VIN before you pay. On a Mazda6 of the affected years, the specific thing worth establishing is whether the evaporative work was ever performed — and, if the car is a 2010 to 2012 with the 2.5L, whether it was caught by the later campaign as well as the earlier one.
Neither campaign is a reason to walk away from an otherwise sound car. They are reasons to ask a dealer to pull the campaign history rather than trusting that two owners ago somebody dealt with it.
What the recall record excludes
A recall lookup reports whether the manufacturer currently owes this vehicle a free safety repair. That is the whole of its scope.
Collision history, title brands, odometer accuracy and lender claims sit in other systems entirely. A Mazda with nothing open can still have been flooded, rebuilt and retitled somewhere else.
