The regulation setting out VIN content is specific about what each type of vehicle must make decipherable. A passenger car: make, line, series, body type, engine type, and all restraint devices and their location. A truck: make, model or line, series, chassis, cab type, engine type, brake system, gross vehicle weight rating, and restraints below a weight threshold. A motorcycle: make, type of motorcycle, line, engine type and net brake horsepower.
Read across those lists and fuel never appears. Nor does drive type, nor seating capacity. The scheme is narrower than most people assume, and fuel sits outside it.
So how does a decoder know?
Two mechanisms, and both are legitimate. The first is derivation: engine type is required, and an engine implies a fuel. The second is supply — manufacturers file decoding information with NHTSA, and that filing can carry more than the regulation strictly demands.
The federal decoder reflects both. It is built on manufacturer submissions rather than on character parsing, which is why it can return fields the rule never required. That is a strength, and it is also why coverage varies: a field nobody was obliged to supply is a field that can be missing.
Engine type is doing the work
In practice, the engine declaration is what makes fuel knowable. A manufacturer identifying a specific engine family has identified something with a known fuel, and any decoder holding that mapping can report it.
The practical implication is that fuel inherits engine’s reliability. Where the engine decodes cleanly, the fuel type behind it is about as dependable as the engine itself. Where the engine is ambiguous — an older vehicle, a sparse filing — the fuel answer inherits that ambiguity rather than standing independently.

Flex fuel, and why the question comes up
Flex-fuel capability is the most common reason people go looking for fuel type in a VIN, and it is a sensible question to ask: running the wrong fuel in a vehicle that cannot take it is an expensive mistake, and flex-fuel vehicles are not always obviously marked.
The usual route works — flex-fuel versions typically carry a distinct engine declaration — but this is a case where the physical evidence is easy to obtain and worth taking. A yellow fuel cap or a marking inside the fuel door is the manufacturer telling you directly, on the car, without a lookup in between.
The diesel question
Diesel is the other high-stakes case, and here the decode is on its firmest ground. A diesel engine is a different engine type from its gasoline counterpart, so the distinction lives exactly where the regulation requires clarity.
On a used truck or van in particular, this is worth doing before the viewing rather than after. Diesel and gasoline versions of the same nameplate differ in price, in running costs and in what maintenance history you should be asking about, and a listing that gets it wrong wastes everyone’s afternoon.
Electric and hybrid vehicles
Electrification complicates the vocabulary more than the mechanism. A battery electric vehicle has no engine in the traditional sense, and manufacturers handle that within their own declarations. Hybrids carry an internal combustion engine alongside electric drive, and the engine declaration reflects the combustion side.
For a buyer the practical advice is unchanged: decode for what the manufacturer declared, then confirm against the vehicle. On a hybrid the questions that matter — battery condition, warranty coverage on the high-voltage system — are not VIN attributes at all and belong to a service history and an inspection.
Confirming fuel on the car itself
- Read the fuel door and cap — manufacturers label the requirement where you fill it
- Check the engine's own identification where it is accessible
- Treat a decoded fuel type as the as-built answer, not the current one
- Ask directly about conversions on any older or high-mileage vehicle
