Engine size by VIN: one of the few attributes the rule insists on

Several things people expect a VIN to carry are simply not there — tire size, axle ratio, transmission on most vehicles. Engine is the opposite case. Federal rules put engine type on the required list for nearly every class of vehicle, which is why decoding it works so consistently. What the rule does not do is tell you which character to read, and that omission is deliberate.

Federal rules specify, per vehicle type, what a VIN must make decipherable. For a passenger car that is make, line, series, body type, engine type, and all restraint devices and their location. Engine type is not an optional extra a manufacturer may include if it feels helpful — it is one of the attributes the second section of the VIN is obliged to identify.

That obligation is the reason engine decoding behaves so differently from, say, transmission. A decoder returning an engine is reading something the manufacturer was required to encode and required to explain. A decoder returning a transmission is usually reporting information supplied for convenience.

Almost every class of vehicle carries it

The requirement is unusually broad. Engine type appears in the required information for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, motorcycles, incomplete vehicles other than trailers, and low speed vehicles.

The conspicuous exception is the trailer, whose required information is make, type of trailer, body type, length and axle configuration — a list that reflects the obvious fact that trailers do not have engines. Beyond that, if it has an engine, the rule wants the engine identified.

The rule says engine type, not engine size

Worth being precise, because the search phrase and the regulation use different words. What is required is engine type. Displacement in liters is not the regulated quantity.

In practice the distinction rarely bites, because a manufacturer defining engine type almost always defines it at the level of a specific engine family, and that family has a displacement. But it explains why a decode sometimes returns an engine designation rather than a tidy number, and why the designation is the more authoritative of the two — it is the thing the manufacturer actually declared.

Why no universal chart can exist

The second section consists of five characters occupying positions four through eight, and must uniquely identify the required attributes. Then comes the provision that defeats every generic chart: the characters utilized and their placement within the section may be determined by the manufacturer.

So the engine character floats. It is somewhere in that five-character window on every compliant vehicle, and where exactly is a decision the maker took and then filed. Charts promising that position eight is always the engine are describing one manufacturer’s convention and generalizing it into a rule that does not exist.

The filing that turns characters into an engine

The regulation closes the loop by requiring manufacturers to submit to NHTSA the information necessary to decipher the characters contained in their VINs, with amendments filed whenever the coding changes. The submission must be made at least 60 days before the first vehicle carrying that coding is offered for sale.

That body of filings is what every credible decoder is really reading. It is also why the federal vPIC decoder is free and authoritative: it is an interface onto information the manufacturers were obliged to hand over in the first place.

Why this particular answer is unusually reliable

Set engine beside the other attributes people ask a VIN for and the difference is structural. Tire size was never given a field. Transmission is absent from the required list for most vehicles. Trim is derived from line and series rather than encoded.

Engine sits in a different category: required by the rule, filed with the agency, and checkable against a free federal decoder. When a decode returns an engine, the chain behind that answer is about as solid as anything in vehicle records gets.

Where it matters: parts, repairs and listings

Engine identification is the single most useful thing a VIN gives a parts counter. It resolves the questions that generic model-year lookups leave open, and it is why catalogs ask for the full seventeen characters rather than the year and model.

It matters in listings for a different reason. Engine is one of the attributes most commonly stated loosely by sellers — a model offered with two or three engines gets described with whichever is most attractive. The decode settles it in seconds and costs nothing.

Confirming the engine actually in the car

One limit deserves stating plainly. The VIN records what the manufacturer built. It does not record what is under the hood today.

On an older or higher-mileage vehicle, an engine replacement is entirely possible and changes nothing about the seventeen characters. A swapped engine is not necessarily a problem — a properly replaced unit can be the best thing about a car — but it is something to establish rather than assume.
