What the federal record shows about the 2013 Ford Escape
Two federal datasets describe this model year and they answer different questions. Recall campaigns are manufacturer-acknowledged defects the maker must remedy at no charge — the 2013 Ford Escape has 18. Complaints are unverified reports filed by owners, and NHTSA holds 2,748 of them here. Neither is a verdict on the car in a seller's driveway, but together they map where this generation needs attention.
Within those complaints, 50 reports describing a crash, 89 describing a fire, 55 reporting an injury. Those flags come from what the owner described when filing, not from a NHTSA investigation, and a single incident can generate several reports — but they are the entries worth reading in full before buying.
NHTSA also lists 4 open or closed investigations touching this model year. Investigations sometimes end in a recall and sometimes in nothing at all; they are an early signal rather than a finding.
The 18 recall campaigns on the 2013 Escape
None of these repairs costs an owner anything, and none of them times out. What varies is whether a specific car falls inside the affected build range and whether a previous owner ever booked the work, which is what a VIN lookup settles.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Escape vehicles manufactured October 5, 2011, through April 10, 2014. Due to an assembly misalignment between the exterior door handle and the door outer panel, the affected vehicles have doors that may be difficult to close or may possibly open while driving.
Why it matters: A door that opens unexpectedly may result in an unrestrained occupant falling from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.
The fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the door handles, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S03.
15V813000 — Electrical system — wiring
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured January 11, 2012, to April 1, 2013, and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles manufactured May 03, 2012, to October 14, 2013. Insufficient compression in the engine wiring harness splices to the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor may provide incorrect signals to the powertrain control module (PCM).
Why it matters: The incorrect signals could cause the vehicle to hesitate or the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the current crimped splices with new splices, free of charge. The recall began on January 7, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S17-S1.
14V237000 — Air bags — frontal — sensor / control module-inactive
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 C-MAX, and Escape vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the restraint control module (RCM) may have errors in the programming software which may result in a delayed deployment of the side-curtain rollover air bag.
Why it matters: If the side-curtain rollover air bag is delayed in deploying in certain rollover circumstances, the risk of injury to the passengers is increased.
The fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the RCM, free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S04.
14V495000 — Electrical system — wiring
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Escape vehicles manufactured October 5, 2011, to April 1, 2013, and equipped with 2.0 liter engines and Focus ST vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, to October 14, 2013, and equipped with 2.0 liter engines.
The recall began in October 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S17.
12V319000 — Service brakes, hydraulic — pedals and linkages
FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2013 ESCAPE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM MARCH 8, 2012 THROUGH JUNE 7, 2012. DUE TO MIS-POSITIONED CARPET PADDING THE CENTER CONSOLE TRIM PANEL MAY BE PUSHED OUTBOARD OF THE INTENDED POSITION, REDUCING CLEARANCE RELATIVE TO THE PEDAL PACKAGE.
Why it matters: THE REDUCED CLEARANCE MAY RESULT IN THE DRIVER?S FOOT CONTACTING THE SIDE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE TRANSFERRING THE FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, INCREASING STOPPING DISTANCES AND THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The fix: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE CARPET PADDING AND LEFT-SIDE CONSOLE TRIM PANEL REPLACED WITH A NEW PANEL, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 20, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.
A further 8 campaigns on this vehicle are listed in the table above and also coverother models — industry-wide actions like the Takata inflator recalls sweep up many nameplates at once. Read those in full on NHTSA’s page for the campaign number, and use a VIN check to see which apply to one specific car.
Where 2013 Escape complaints cluster
NHTSA files every complaint under the component the owner blamed. For the 2013 Ford Escape the 12 biggest categories carry most of the 2,748 reports, and that shape matters more than the total — evenly spread complaints read very differently from a third of owners describing one identical failure.
| Component | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1,267 (46%) |
| Power train | 401 (15%) |
| Electrical system | 340 (12%) |
| Steering | 302 (11%) |
| Unknown or other | 299 (11%) |
| Fuel / propulsion system | 247 (9%) |
| Engine and engine cooling | 174 (6%) |
| Vehicle speed control | 92 (3%) |
| Structure | 87 (3%) |
| Service brakes | 75 (3%) |
| Latches / locks / linkages | 65 (2%) |
| Air bags | 55 (2%) |
That concentration is the headline for this model year: engine draws 46% of everything filed, which is the pattern of a specific weakness rather than ordinary wear reporting. Whatever the shape, complaints are what owners believed happened; the inspection list further down is how you test that against the actual car.
When owners filed, and why the timing matters
Complaint filings for the 2013 Ford Escape peaked in 2019. Two different stories produce complaint peaks. One is a design or assembly fault that shows up almost immediately and gets absorbed by warranty repairs and recalls. The other is a component reaching the end of its service life, which arrives with mileage and lands on whoever owns the car at the time.
A 2013 Escape is old enough that condition and maintenance history outweigh anything in the federal record — the complaints below tell you where to look, not what you will find.
Read against the rest of the run, this year sits above the nameplate’s own median year for complaint volume. Not every Escape year reads the same way, and knowing which ones are worth stepping around is often the difference between two listings at the same price — see every Ford Escape model year ranked.
| The 2013 against the rest of the run | What the record shows |
|---|---|
| Complaint volume | 1st heaviest of 15 model years on record (2008–2022) |
| Against the median Ford Escape year | 1.56× |
| Lightest settled year | 2021, at 0.2× the median |
How old a Escape usually is when each system fails
Every complaint below carries the date the owner says the failure happened, and the gap between that date and the 2013model year is the age of the car when it broke. Read down the right-hand column: the systems that fail early were mostly somebody else’s warranty problem, and the ones that fail late are the bill waiting for whoever owns the car next.
| System | Typical age when it failed |
|---|---|
| Engine | 6.1 years (1266 reports) · 18% inside the first three years |
| Power train | 6.8 years (401 reports) · 13% inside the first three years |
| Electrical system | 5.3 years (339 reports) · 25% inside the first three years |
| Steering | 7.5 years (301 reports) · 8% inside the first three years |
| Unknown or other | 7.3 years (299 reports) · 6% inside the first three years |
| Fuel / propulsion system | 6.5 years (246 reports) · 10% inside the first three years |
| Engine and engine cooling | 9.5 years (174 reports) · 9% inside the first three years |
| Vehicle speed control | 5.2 years (92 reports) · 32% inside the first three years |
Nothing on this car concentrates inside the first three years, which means the reported failures largely arrived after the original warranty ran out and land on the owner rather than the manufacturer. Engine and engine cooling is the latest-arriving of the group at a median of 9.5 years, which is the one to budget for on a car of this age.
Crash-test ratings for the 2013 Escape
NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program crash-tested this model year. The ratings describe how a tested configuration performed against standardized tests — a five-star car that has been through a collision and a bad repair is no longer the car that earned the stars.
| Test | Rating |
|---|---|
| Overall | 4 of 5 |
| Frontal crash | 4 of 5 |
| Side crash | 5 of 5 |
| Rollover | 4 of 5 |
| Rollover probability | 18.5% |
NHTSA rated 2 configurations of this model year separately, and they do not always score alike — drivetrain and body style change how a vehicle behaves in the rollover and side tests especially. Check which one you are actually looking at.
| Tested configuration | Overall / rollover |
|---|---|
| 2013 Ford Escape SUV 4x4 | 4 of 5 · rollover 4 of 5 |
| 2013 Ford Escape SUV 4x2 | 4 of 5 · rollover 4 of 5 |
The tested configuration above was the 2013 Ford Escape SUV 4x4. Driver-assistance equipment on this model year: forward collision warning was not offered, and lane departure warning was not available.
What to inspect on a 2013 Ford Escape
Use the complaint pattern as a targeting tool. A SUV of this age needs the usual scrutiny regardless, but these specific items earned their place by recurring in the 2013 Ford Escape's federal file — check them first, and price whatever turns up.
- Engine — 1,267 owners filed about this; have a mechanic look here first
- Power train — 401 owners filed about this; have a mechanic look here first
- Electrical system — 340 owners filed about this; have a mechanic look here first
- Recall completion — confirm by VIN that all 18 campaigns were actually repaired, not just mailed about
- Corrosion and suspension wear — at this age, condition outranks anything in the federal record
- Engine bay and wiring — fire reports exist for this model year, so inspect for heat damage and amateur electrical work
SUV-specific checks on this 2013 Escape
Nothing in the federal record covers ordinary SUV wear, so add these. They are the checks a mechanic makes on any SUV before worrying about what makes this one a 2013 Ford Escape.
- All-wheel-drive engagement — transfer cases and couplings fail expensively and hide well on a short test drive
- Rear tailgate seals and the spare well — water pools here first and rots outward unnoticed
- Third-row and folding-seat mechanisms if fitted, plus the floor beneath them for damp
- Roof-rail and crossbar mounts — loads carried up high stress mounts that leak once disturbed
Questions worth asking the seller
Each of these turns something on this page into a question the seller either answers confidently or does not.
- Were the 18 campaigns completed, and is there dealer paperwork for them?
- Has the engine ever been repaired or replaced?
- Who has serviced it, and can I see the records?
- Has it been in a collision, and did insurance pay for the repair?
- Can I take it to my own mechanic before we agree a price?
- Is the title in your name and free of any lien?

Frequently asked questions
How many recalls does the 2013 Ford Escape have?
NHTSA lists 18 recall campaigns covering the 2013 Ford Escape, the earliest reported 15/01/2026. Campaign numbers and remedies are listed on this page, but recalls apply to VIN ranges rather than every car of a model year — only a VIN check confirms which apply to a specific vehicle.
What problems do owners report with the 2013 Ford Escape?
Owners have filed 2,748 complaints with NHTSA about the 2013 Ford Escape. The largest group — 1,267 of them, about 46% — concerns engine. Complaints are unverified owner reports, not confirmed defects, but concentrations point to where this model year needs inspection.
Is the 2013 Ford Escape a safe car?
NHTSA's crash tests gave the 2013 Ford Escape an overall rating of 4 of 5 stars, with 4 stars for rollover resistance. Crash ratings describe how the model performed in standardized tests — they say nothing about how this particular used car has been maintained or repaired.
How do I check recalls on a specific 2013 Escape?
Use the VIN. Recalls apply to production ranges, so two cars from the same model year can carry different open campaigns. A free VIN check shows which of these apply to that individual vehicle and whether the repairs were ever completed.
