Why the VIN is the right place to start
Tow ratings are published per configuration, not per model, and the gap between the brochure headline and a specific truck can be enormous. The VIN is the fastest way to fix the variables that matter most: model year, engine, body style and, on most manufacturers, the drivetrain. The door jamb, and what it does and does not tell you
The certification label on the driver’s door jamb carries GVWR — the maximum the loaded vehicle itself may weigh — plus front and rear axle weight ratings and the original tire and loading information. Many vehicles also carry a payload figure there, sometimes on a separate sticker.
What the jamb does not carry is the tow rating, and that surprises people. Towing capacity comes from the manufacturer’s guide for the configuration; the jamb supplies the weight limits that constrain how you use it. Both matter, and the jamb is the one that is physically attached to the vehicle you are standing next to.
The payload trap — the limit that bites first
Most people who exceed a rating exceed payload, not tow capacity. Here is why: conventional trailers put roughly 10 to 15 percent of their weight on the hitch as tongue weight, and that weight counts against the vehicle’s payload — alongside passengers, fuel, tools, the dog and everything in the bed.
Work an example. A crew-cab truck with a payload allowance around 1,600 pounds, carrying four adults and gear, might have 900 pounds left. A 7,000-pound trailer with 12 percent tongue weight puts 840 pounds on the hitch. That truck is at its payload limit while still comfortably under a tow rating that may read 11,000 pounds — and the sticker says nothing is wrong.
GCWR: the number that actually governs
Gross Combined Weight Rating is the manufacturer’s maximum for vehicle and trailer together, loaded as you will actually drive them. It is the honest constraint, because a tow rating assumes a lightly loaded vehicle and almost nobody tows that way. The usable calculation is straightforward: take GCWR, subtract the real weight of your loaded vehicle with people and gear aboard, and what remains is the trailer you can legitimately pull. Weighing the loaded vehicle at a public scale costs a few dollars and replaces a lot of guessing.
The hitch is a separate rating, and it caps everything
Vehicle, hitch receiver, ball mount, ball and any weight-distribution system each carry their own maximum, and your real limit is the lowest one in that chain. A factory receiver on a capable truck is often rated well below the vehicle’s ceiling, and an aftermarket ball rated for 5,000 pounds silently caps a 9,000-pound setup. Read the stamp on every component before assuming the truck’s number applies.
Buying a tow vehicle used
- Decode the VIN before you travel — it tells you whether the configuration can possibly meet your need
- Confirm the axle code from the glovebox label rather than the seller's recollection
- Look for tow-package evidence: factory wiring, a transmission cooler, and an integrated brake controller
- Check the hitch and receiver ratings physically, and factor replacement into the price if they are low
- Read the towing history in the metal — hitch wear, sagging rear springs and worn rear tires say the truck worked
- Run the recall and title checks as on any purchase; a tow vehicle's history matters more, not less

Can you find towing capacity from a VIN?
