Build location is not trivia on a Tesla. It has correlated with battery cell supplier and chemistry, with certain hardware revisions, and at times with build quality reputation. It is the one piece of genuinely useful differentiation the VIN gives you.

Software features are not in the VIN — and this is the big one

On a conventional car, capability is hardware and hardware is permanent. On a Tesla a significant share of what the car can do is software, licensed to the vehicle and administered through a Tesla account.

Battery degradation is the single largest determinant of a used electric vehicle's value, and it varies with usage patterns, charging habits, climate and age. Assessing it requires the car, not the number.

Salvage-titled Teslas and Supercharging

This is the branded-title issue specific to Tesla, and it catches buyers who reason by analogy with conventional cars. Tesla has restricted Supercharger network access on vehicles carrying salvage titles.

The practical consequence is severe: a cheap salvage Tesla that cannot use the Supercharger network is a substantially different product from one that can, particularly for anyone who travels beyond home charging range.

Tesla recalls often arrive over the air

Tesla issues safety recalls like any manufacturer, and they appear in NHTSA's database and lookup. What differs is the remedy: many Tesla recalls are addressed by a software update delivered over the air rather than a workshop visit.

Transferring the vehicle to your account

A Tesla is administered through an owner account, and a used purchase involves transferring the vehicle out of the seller's account into yours. Until that happens, the previous owner retains app access to the car.
