Two cars a hundred thousand dollars apart can carry VINs that differ only in sequence — which is the entire authentication problem in one sentence.

The Fisher Body tag on the firewall records what the VIN skips: body build date (month and week), style number, interior trim code, and upper and lower paint codes. Reading it against the car answers the first authentication questions — does the paint code match the color story, does the build date sit plausibly before the assembly date, does the trim code match the interior? Reproduction tags exist and are sold openly, which is why serious verification treats the tag as one witness among several, checks its rivets and font, and expects its story to align with pad stampings and paperwork it could not have coordinated with.

X-codes and the SS question

Norwood’s 1969 cowl tags carry the famous X-codes — X11, X33, X44, X55 and kin — which encode trim and, in the combinations collectors memorize, SS and Z/28 equipment groups. They are the best single hint on a Norwood car and a trap everywhere else: Van Nuys tags did not use the system equivalently, meanings shifted through the production year, and a stamped X-code has never been beyond the reach of a reproduction press.
