What the federal record shows about the 2009 Nissan Versa
The federal file on any vehicle has two halves that get confused constantly. Recalls — 8 on the 2009 Nissan Versa — are defects the manufacturer admitted and must remedy at no charge. Complaints — 503 here — are what owners reported, unverified and unfiltered. Read the first as a to-do list and the second as a map of where this model year gets fragile.
Within those complaints, 27 reports describing a crash, 2 describing a fire, 16 reporting an injury. Those flags come from what the owner described when filing, not from a NHTSA investigation, and a single incident can generate several reports — but they are the entries worth reading in full before buying.
NHTSA also lists 2 open or closed investigations touching this model year. Investigations sometimes end in a recall and sometimes in nothing at all; they are an early signal rather than a finding.
The 8 recall campaigns on the 2009 Versa
Each campaign below is free to have repaired at a franchise dealer, and safety recalls never expire. They apply to production ranges rather than every car built that year, so treat this as the list to check a VIN against.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Why it matters: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these passenger air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
Why it matters: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 9, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
17V028000 — Air bags — frontal — passenger side — inflator module
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2012 Nissan Versa hatchbacks originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan) and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A". Additionally, if not included in "Zone A" above, Nissan is recalling certain 2009-2010 Infiniti M35 and M45 and 2009 Nissan Versa sedans and hatchbacks originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B". Additionally, if not included in "Zone A" or "Zone B" above, Nissan is recalling certain 2005-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45, 2006-2010 Infiniti M35 and M45, and 2007-2008 Nissan Versa vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
Why it matters: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators, free of charge. The recall began on June 8, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
17V449000 — Air bags — frontal — driver side — inflator module
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and 2007-2012 Versa Hatchback vehicles. The affected vehicles have a driver frontal air bag inflator that may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to moderate absolute humidity, temperatures, and temperature cycling.
Why it matters: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the subject inflator with a new one manufactured by a different supplier, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
15V573000 — Suspension — front — springs — coil springs
Nissan (Nissan North America, Inc.) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Nissan Versa vehicles manufactured May 8, 2006, to November 12, 2012, that were sold or ever registered in the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Road salt may corrode the front coil springs, possibly resulting in the coil springs fracturing.
Why it matters: If a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire, possibly puncturing it, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front coil springs, free of charge. The recall began on February 2, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
Where 2009 Versa complaints cluster
Owners choose the category when they file, so this table reflects what people believed had failed. Across 503 reports on the 2009 Nissan Versa, the 12 leading categories are where that belief clustered — and a tight cluster is a far stronger buying signal than a high count spread thinly.
| Component | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Suspension | 182 (36%) |
| Air bags | 179 (36%) |
| Steering | 28 (6%) |
| Wheels | 26 (5%) |
| Engine and engine cooling | 23 (5%) |
| Power train | 20 (4%) |
| Engine | 18 (4%) |
| Structure | 18 (4%) |
| Tires | 18 (4%) |
| Unknown or other | 15 (3%) |
| Fuel system | 15 (3%) |
| Electrical system | 14 (3%) |
That concentration is the headline for this model year: suspension draws 36% of everything filed, which is the pattern of a specific weakness rather than ordinary wear reporting. Whatever the shape, complaints are what owners believed happened; the inspection list further down is how you test that against the actual car.
When owners filed, and why the timing matters
Complaint filings for the 2009 Nissan Versa peaked in 2017. When the reports arrived matters as much as how many. Early clusters tend to be factory problems that warranty work and recalls have since addressed. Late clusters are age and mileage catching up with a component, which is precisely the phase a second or third owner buys into.
A 2009 Versa is old enough that condition and maintenance history outweigh anything in the federal record — the complaints below tell you where to look, not what you will find.
Read against the rest of the run, this year sits among the heaviest-complaint years the nameplate has recorded. Not every Versa year reads the same way, and knowing which ones are worth stepping around is often the difference between two listings at the same price — see every Nissan Versa model year ranked.
| The 2009 against the rest of the run | What the record shows |
|---|---|
| Complaint volume | 1st heaviest of 15 model years on record (2008–2022) |
| Against the median Nissan Versa year | 2.47× |
| Lightest settled year | 2022, at 0.1× the median |
How old a Versa usually is when each system fails
Every complaint below carries the date the owner says the failure happened, and the gap between that date and the 2009model year is the age of the car when it broke. Read down the right-hand column: the systems that fail early were mostly somebody else’s warranty problem, and the ones that fail late are the bill waiting for whoever owns the car next.
| System | Typical age when it failed |
|---|---|
| Suspension | 6.3 years (182 reports) · 3% inside the first three years |
| Air bags | 8.3 years (178 reports) · 2% inside the first three years |
| Steering | 5.7 years (28 reports) · 21% inside the first three years |
| Wheels | 5.2 years (26 reports) · 8% inside the first three years |
| Engine and engine cooling | 4.3 years (23 reports) · 43% inside the first three years |
| Power train | 6.8 years (20 reports) · 25% inside the first three years |
| Engine | 7.3 years (18 reports) · 11% inside the first three years |
| Structure | 5.2 years (18 reports) · 22% inside the first three years |
Nothing on this car concentrates inside the first three years, which means the reported failures largely arrived after the original warranty ran out and land on the owner rather than the manufacturer. Air bags is the latest-arriving of the group at a median of 8.3 years, which is the one to budget for on a car of this age.
Crash-test ratings for the 2009 Versa
Crash ratings are a property of the design as it left the factory. They remain useful for comparing model years against each other, and useless for judging whether one particular used example still performs that way — which depends entirely on what has happened to its structure since.

What to inspect on a 2009 Nissan Versa
Everything above describes a population of cars. This is how to turn that into an inspection of one: each item below exists because owners of this model year kept reporting it, which makes it worth a mechanic's time before the general compact checklist.
- Suspension — 182 owners filed about this; have a mechanic look here first
- Air bags — 179 owners filed about this; have a mechanic look here first
- Steering — 28 owners filed about this; have a mechanic look here first
- Recall completion — confirm by VIN that all 8 campaigns were actually repaired, not just mailed about
- Corrosion and suspension wear — at this age, condition outranks anything in the federal record
- Engine bay and wiring — fire reports exist for this model year, so inspect for heat damage and amateur electrical work
Compact-specific checks on this 2009 Versa
Every compact has failure points that have nothing to do with which badge it wears. Run these alongside the complaint-driven list above — the federal record cannot see any of them.
- Clutch or transmission behavior from cold — the wear item that decides a small car's value
- Suspension top mounts and bushings, which take a beating on short-wheelbase cars
- Rear beam and trailing-arm corrosion, often overlooked on cheap cars until it fails inspection
- Interior wear against the claimed mileage — small cars accumulate hard urban miles
Questions worth asking the seller
Each of these turns something on this page into a question the seller either answers confidently or does not.
- Were the 8 campaigns completed, and is there dealer paperwork for them?
- Has the suspension ever been repaired or replaced?
- Who has serviced it, and can I see the records?
- Has it been in a collision, and did insurance pay for the repair?
- Can I take it to my own mechanic before we agree a price?
- Is the title in your name and free of any lien?

Frequently asked questions
How many recalls does the 2009 Nissan Versa have?
NHTSA lists 8 recall campaigns covering the 2009 Nissan Versa, the earliest reported 09/08/2022. Campaign numbers and remedies are listed on this page, but recalls apply to VIN ranges rather than every car of a model year — only a VIN check confirms which apply to a specific vehicle.
What problems do owners report with the 2009 Nissan Versa?
Owners have filed 503 complaints with NHTSA about the 2009 Nissan Versa. The largest group — 182 of them, about 36% — concerns suspension. Complaints are unverified owner reports, not confirmed defects, but concentrations point to where this model year needs inspection.
Is the 2009 Nissan Versa a safe car?
NHTSA has no crash-test rating on file for the 2009 Nissan Versa, which is common for configurations outside the tested trims. The recall and complaint record on this page is the federal safety information available for it.
How do I check recalls on a specific 2009 Versa?
Take the VIN off the windshield and check that, not the model year. Campaigns cover specific production spans, and the same lookup tells you whether a previous owner ever booked the free repair.
Where does this data come from?
All of it comes from NHTSA's public databases: the recall file, the consumer complaint database and the New Car Assessment Program's crash tests. Nothing here is proprietary, and the figures were last pulled on 2026-08-16.
